How To Become Trauma Informed with Lara Land

Today, we’re talking about how we can best serve and hold space within our classrooms, yoga spaces, and with our clients.

It’s with great joy that we welcome back our dearest friend Lara Land. The last time Russell got to wear his yarmulke (pronounced yamakah) was at her wedding in New York, 2019. A very different time ago, but one we remember with deep affection.

Lara speaks today about some of her personal experiences that brought her to this chosen path…

How she started off teaching yoga in Rwanda to survivors of genocide. Then, after opening her yoga school in Harlem, NY, she recognized that her yoga space required a different kind of awareness and presence.

She felt called to share these powerful tools with those who may never venture into a yoga studio. So, she established her non-profit organization dedicated bringing trauma sensitive yoga and mindfulness to those who need it most.

We need to be trauma informed in our teaching, as we facilitate wellness spaces, now more than ever.

So, Lara’s new book, The Essential Guide to Trauma Sensitive Yoga, couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s now available for pre-order!

Lara is a joy to speak with and an expert when it comes to helping you understand how to be with others, especially those who have a trauma background, which as she so aptly observes, is all of us to some extent. Her energy is so understanding, which allows our humanness to settle into being again.

Thank you, dear sister for sharing yourself with us!

In Lara’s own words:

“I believe our bodies tell the stories of our lives and hold teachings of our ancestors all the way back.

As we awaken to the body’s sensations, it shares its wisdom and reveals the path to personal and collective health and transformation.

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a source of healing in this world.

I use the practices of Restorative Yoga and Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga Philosophy, Embodied Coaching, Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness and Somatic Attachment Therapy in my offerings and in my own process releasing trauma and building capacity to be with life’s complexities.

Central to that healing work is delving into our personal history of trauma and to see how we repeat patterns which perpetuate harm. Only when we see and heal this can we then begin to dismantle it starting with self and working outward from there to realign our families and communities around values of equity and non harm.”
