with Daniel Simpson

In our modern world, yoga has often been distilled down to a series of physical postures designed to enhance flexibility, strength, and overall wellness. But, today, we’re exploring the rich history and philosophy of yoga’s orgins, which goes far beyond the physical. Our guest today, Daniel Simpson, is passionate about bridging ancient wisdom with contemporary life.

The Yoga-Body Connection: More Than Meets the Eye

The popularity of yoga in the West has largely been driven by its focus on physical benefits. Classes promising a toned “yoga-body” equipped with increased strength and flexibility, with a side of nervous system regulation. But if we peel back the layers, we find that the true essence of yoga lies in its ability to transform the mind, and see beyond the illusion of physical form.

Historically, yoga was never about the body. In ancient texts, yoga is described as a means to transcend our ego-identification. The postures (asanas) we see glorified on social media, were merely tools to help the practitioner develop discipline, focus, and an awareness of the mind-body-spirit connection.

Mind Over Matter

Yoga started off as a mental discipline. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, defines yoga as "a channelization of the fluctuations of the mind” (yoga-chitta-vritti-nirodha), which allows for a state of pure awareness or presence to arise.

Our conversation with Professor Daniel Simpson, is a deep dive into the ancient origins of yoga, where a practitioner’s ultimate aim was to transcend the body and eliminate all desires and identifications. This is in stark contrast to our contemporary focus of using yoga as a way to generate health and beauty so we can live longer in our physical body, which we’re very much attached to. Understanding this shift in perspective is crucial for those looking to deepen their practice and use yoga as an effective path to freedom.

Yoga in the Age of Wellness

The modern wellness industry has embraced yoga as a key component of a healthy lifestyle. While this has helped popularize yoga and make it accessible to a broader audience, it has also led to watering down the true teachings and a narrow interpretation of what yoga is. We see yoga often marketed as a fitness regimen, focusing on physical prowess and aesthetic goals.

However, the real power of yoga lies in its ability to show us that we are not the physical body, nor are we our thoughts.

By integrating all eight-limbs of the Ashtanga yoga path, focusing on svadhyaya (self-study), pranayama (focused breathing with retention), pratyahara (concentration and withdrawal of our sense perceptions), and dhyana (meditation) we can honour the essence of yoga as a path to waking up!

These practices not only help us develop resilience, reduce stress, and foster a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. But ultimately, lead to our liberation - Freedom from suffering.

Practical Steps to Integrate Philosophy into Practice

  1. Start with the Breath: Incorporate pranayama into your daily routine. Simple practices like deep breathing with a longer exhale or alternate nostril breathing can have profound effects on your mental state.

  2. Meditation Matters: Dedicate a few minutes each day to meditation (dhyana). This can be as simple as sitting in silence and observing your immediate sense perceptions, your breath, or using a mantra or guided meditation.

  3. Study and Reflect: Read and reflect on the deeper philosophical teachings of the yoga tradition. There are many accessible translations and commentaries on key texts that can provide deeper insights, and many wonderful teachers to learn from.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Bring mindfulness into your daily activities. Whether it’s eating, walking, or working, being fully present in the moment can transform mundane tasks into meditative practices. This is a powerful practice that unlocks the essence of yoga, and integrates its teachings into every aspect of your life.

  5. Engage in Self-Study: Keep a journal to document your thoughts, experiences, and insights as you delve deeper into your yoga practice. This can help you track your progress and stay connected to your inner journey.

By integrating these elements into our practice, we honor the holistic nature of yoga and tap into its transformative power. A power that lies in experiencing our body through sensation, witnessing our mind by seeing our thoughts, and tuning into our spirit by using our breath, to guide us in discovering the answer to the perennial question: WHO AM I?
